4/20/09 is a big day for us. We formed Rosetta Stoned in 2006 and this is the first project we’ve released as a group. Ironically enough, most of the tracks on this mixtape were never supposed to be heard outside of our studio. I compiled this album out of a bunch of unpolished gems from 2006-2007. Most of these songs weren’t mixed properly and only one or two songs were actually mastered (Shouts to Keith Lay aka Knos for touching up the sound a lot!).
“Now keep in mind that I’m an artist and I’m sensitive about my shit.” --Erykah Badu
The Kingdom of Kush is a labor of love. We take hip hop seriously. If you’ve ever been to any of our shows, parties, or just met us on the street, you know we don’t care about the bullshit that’s associated with hip hop. We don’t rap for money, fame, or women. Our goal is to create unique, expressive, intelligent pieces of art. Trying to sound like other rappers is wack…that’s why so many wack rappers sound the same.
"If I'm going to sing like someone else, then I don't need to sing at all." --Billie Holiday
This project is an homage to all the artists who’ve recorded classic albums in their basement, the tape traders, the crate diggers, but it’s mostly for the young cats who are hungry for raw hip hop. On some real shit, I think the standard for what a dope rapper should be has dropped too much over the last decade. I just want to raise the bar.
